Xi an

Hallo allemaal, alweer een week verder. Ik ben vanochten in Xi An aangekomen na een 19 uur durende treinreis in mn 'hard sleeper'. Het viel nog wel mee, het bed was een beetje hard, maar goed te doen. Je ligt met zes bedden in een compartiment, wat open is aan de gang-kant, dus een beetje lawaaig maar gelukkig lagen er alleen maar Chinezen om me heen, en die gaan allemaal om 21:00 slapen. (ze staan dan wel ook allemaal om 06:00 uur op...)

Gelijk kwam ik al een stel Duitsers tegen en we hebben de hele dag in de stad rondgewandeld. Er is hier een grote moslim gemeente, en we zijn naar een moskee geweest uit de 7de of 8ste eeuw. Het ziet er heel raar uit, Chinese moslims...

Deze blog is trouwens volgens mij ook onder censuur hier, want ik kan het zelf niet teruglezen, maar na wat ik vernomen heb werkt ie bij jullie wel.

We zijn later door een markt gelopen met heerlijke stukken vlees die op de grond lagen, onder de vliegen, (levende) kikkers, schildpadden, stukken lever en krab, maar het hoogte (of diepte-) punt vond ik nog een stapel honden, zoals de volgende foto laat zien. (nu zal de blog in de rest van de wereld spoedig gecensueerd worden).

I think my blog is censured here in China, because I can not read it myself, but I heard that it works fine with you guys.

I arrived this morning in Xi 'An after a nice train ride of 19 hours. I had a hard sleeper, which isn't so bad as it sounds. The bed was a bit small. You share a compartment with six people, but the side to the corridor is open, so it can get a bit noisy at times. Luckily, there were only Chinese people on the train, and they all went to bed at 21:00 (but got up at 6:00 in the morning though).

My last days in Shanghai were great: I met my old friend Frank from Groningen, and we spent two days hanging out in town and going out a lot. Last Sunday I went to a place to play poker with some people from the hostel, and whoda though; I won 500 Yuan! (It was my first time in a live game).

I arrived at 9 or so, and checked in at the hostel. I hooked up with some Germans here, and we went for a walk into town. We walked to an area where Chinese muslims live, and it was a bit strange to see (see the 1st photo). We went to a big Mosque from the 7th or 8th century which was beautiful and had some street snacks (I'm not sure what it was, but it tasted sweet).

Later on we walked through a market with nice stuff such as (living) frogs, crab, turtle, and mice. There were also nice tasty pieces of liver, and to top it all, a big stack of dead dogs (see picture - I think my blog will now be censured in the rest of the world too...)

I already bought a train ticket for my next destination: Wuhan. I will go there on Friday and hope to stay a bit longer.

23 October Hangzou

I went to Hangzou on Monday morning by train. I had a hard seat, but as the ride was only 2 hours it was quite ok.
Hangzou has the beautiful West Lake (see photos) and basically all I did there was walk around by the lake.

There were hardly any Western people there, but many Chinese tourists. Anyways, I hooked upwith some Americans and a Canadian and we spent Monday and Tuesday morning by the lake. I even learned to speak some Chinese. I came back to Shanghai last night and I will stay here for another week, before moving on.

Meanwhile, I'll be keeping the streets of Shanghai clean..... :p

Hallo allemaal, alles goed hier in Shanghai. Ik ben afgelopen woensdag aangekomen na een hele lange reis, maar verder goed ingecheckt in het hostel enzo. Eerst nog met de MagLev trein van het vliegveld de stad in met 430 km per uur. Dit is de Bund, het visitekaartje van Shanghai. Gisteravond ben ik die toren helemaal links geweest, naar de 88ste verdieping. Voor de rest heb ik nog niet zo veel dingen bezocht, aangezien het leukste om te doen hier, gewoon door de stad wandelen is.




Zoals je ziet is het lekker druk in de metro en op straat ook. Soms wordt je er helemaal gek van, maar gelukkig steek ik overal 30cm bovenuit dus valt het nog te overzien. Ik heb nog niet eens zo veel foto's gemaakt, maar er zullen zeker meer volgen! Mijn plan momenteel is om morgen naar Huangzou te gaan, wat ongeveer 3 uurtjes met de trein is, en daar een nacht te blijven en dan weer terug te komen naar Shanghai. Ik blijf hier dan denk ik tot na het weekend en ga dan naar Xi' An.




Nog even over het eten hier: je kan op elke hoek van de straat voor 0,10 Euro wat krijgen, dag en nacht. Donderdagavond (3:00 uur) hebben we nog even een snack gehaald op de hoek van de straat (zie foto). Hij had rundvlees, lam en koeienmaag, wat overigens best lekker was. . .





Hi everyone,

for those of you who haven't heard: I am in Shanghai at the moment with the intention of travelling around in China for a couple of months. I arrived on Wednesday and I think I'll stay here 2 weeks.

I shall try to keep this journal as up-to-date as I can.

I reckon the best thing to do in Shanghai is to just wander around. There aren't too many 'attactions' which is good because it saves money. I haven't made so many photos yet, but on the ones above you can get an impression of what it's like here.
Tomorrow I'll probably visit Huangzou, which is supposed to be really beautiful. I will stay there for one night and then return here to Shaghai. I plan to stay here for 2 weeks in total, and then go to Xi'An.
